Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga and representatives from the food industry, including Migros and Coop, signed an agreement to combat food waste in Bern in May. The goal is to halve food waste by 2030. The signatories commit to taking concrete measures to reduce their food waste and to report annually on their progress. The agreement is part of the Action Plan against Food Waste, which the Federal Council adopted in April 2022.
We welcome this development and hope that truly concrete measures will be implemented and that this will not just remain a matter of signatures and lip service.
"Ambitious sustainability targets have a long tradition at the Migros Group. As a retailer and food producer, we take our responsibility to prevent food waste very seriously. Specifically, we are pursuing the goal of reducing food waste in Migros stores by 20% to 1.07% by the end of 2025. Collaborations with charitable organizations and industry networks such as United Against Waste, as well as investments in innovations at Migros Industrie, support us in this effort."
