Protein isolate or hydrolysate – is it really necessary?

Not all whey protein is created equal. Anyone in the fitness or nutrition space quickly encounters terms like isolate or hydrolysate – they sound technical, performance-driven, advanced, and are often marketed as the superior forms of protein. But are they really the better choice?

Upcycling von Schweizer Molke – unsere Proteinquelle

Upcycling Swiss whey – our protein source

When we launched Wheycation, we asked ourselves a lot of questions: Why don't we, as a cheese-making country, make better use of the whey produced during cheese production? Why doesn't the protein in so many functional products come from Switzerland?...

Frequently asked questions about protein powders

How much lactose is in the Recovery Protein Powder Nature or flavored?

The Recovery Protein Powder Nature contains approximately 9.8 g of lactose per 100 g of powder. A 25 g serving provides about 2.5 g of lactose.

The flavored Recovery Protein Powder contains around 6 g of lactose per 100 g of powder. A shake prepared with 40 g of powder and 200 ml of water (as recommended) contains just under 1 g of lactose per 100 ml of finished shake. This is about five times less than regular cow’s milk and is considered low in lactose. Many customers with lactose sensitivity report good tolerability.

What is lactose?

Lactose is milk sugar that naturally occurs in milk and whey. Since our protein powder is made from whey, it may contain traces of lactose.

Is the Recovery Protein Shake suitable as a meal replacement?

The Recovery Shake is quite filling due to its high protein and fiber content and can occasionally serve as a meal replacement. However, to be considered a complete meal replacement - including from a legal standpoint - it would need to contain more vitamins and minerals.

Prepared with low-fat milk and fresh fruit or vegetables as a smoothie, you're already getting quite close.

Important: Always aim for a balanced diet overall, and supplement with micronutrients if needed.

Can I use the Protein Powder Natural for baking?

Unflavored protein powder is an excellent choice for recipes such as pancakes, muffins, and protein bars. You can use it as a substitute for flour. Replacing up to 1/3 of the flour with protein powder works well in many recipes.

Are Wheycation protein products also suitable for children?

Yes, our products are suitable for children, thanks to their natural ingredients and the absence of artificial sweeteners or unnecessary additives. During growth, children have increased energy and protein requirements. This is especially true for physically active children, who rely on adequate protein intake to support healthy development.

Are Wheycation products also suitable for older people?

Yes, increased protein intake is especially important with age to counteract age-related muscle loss. Our products contain high-quality whey protein as well as naturally occurring B vitamins, specifically supporting the maintenance of muscle strength and vitality.

Why does my drink from your Recovery Shake Powder foam so much?

Whey proteins have a foaming and stabilizing effect. The more native the proteins are, the stronger the foam formation. Our whey proteins are very native, which is good for their effect in the body, but unfortunately also creates more foam.

Other manufacturers counteract the foam with defoamers. However, as these are artificial additives, this is out of the question for us. We have tried to optimize the recipes so that the foam is naturally slightly reduced. Mixing it with milk, which contains milk fat, makes the foam more homogeneous, and if the foam bothers you, we also recommend preparing the drink an hour before consumption or simply before training and then refrigerating it. Then it will be perfect when you have finished your workout.

Could the taste of Recovery Shake Powder be any more intense?

It is difficult to achieve an intense, fruity taste in a powdered product. During the drying process, many of the volatile flavors of the fruit are lost along with the water. And in a product with a low fat and sugar content, it is an additional challenge to enhance the flavor intensity of the flavors present in the finished product in a natural way; it does not work by simply adding more flavors.

The perception of the intensity of the flavor is also primarily related to the sweetness, which we work with great restraint in the Recovery Shake Powder. We do not add any sugar or artificial sweeteners, and the fat content also plays a major role in the perception of flavor. This is noticeable when the shakes are mixed with milk or a fat-containing milk substitute. The flavor is immediately more intense due to the higher fat content and also due to the sweetness of the milk or milk substitute, but we have not yet managed to make the flavor more intense without losing any of its naturalness or functionality.

What is xylitol?

Xylitol, also known as birch sugar, is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol included in our products. It is sourced from Finnish birch and serves as a natural alternative to conventional sugar.

Why is xylitol used in our products?

Xylitol (also known as birch sugar) is a natural, tooth-friendly sugar alternative with fewer calories than regular sugar. Thanks to its low glycemic index, xylitol causes only a slow rise in blood sugar levels - making it ideal for a balanced diet without triggering cravings. In our products, xylitol provides a pleasantly natural sweetness - completely free from added sugars.

How much xylitol is in the protein powder?

The amount of xylitol varies depending on the flavor.
Berries: 15 g of xylitol per 100 g of powder, or 6 g per 40 g serving
Vanilla Dream: 17 g of xylitol per 100 g, or 6.8 g per 40 g serving
Cacao: 19 g of xylitol per 100 g, or 7.6 g per 40 g serving

If you prefer to avoid xylitol: our Protein Porridges contain no xylitol at all - they are free from added sugars and sweetened only with the natural sugars found in the ingredients.

How exactly do Wheycation products support physical recovery, preparation for exertion, and the promotion of overall well-being?

Whey proteins play a key role in supporting physical recovery. For us, it is not only important to achieve high protein content in our products, but also to ensure a balanced composition. A healthy diet is a balanced and varied diet. That’s why our products are primarily natural and contain a well-balanced ratio of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) and micronutrients (minerals and vitamins).

Prepare products, designed for preparation before physical exertion, are also rich in protein but contain more carbohydrates and dietary fiber compared to recovery products. This ensures they provide longer-lasting satiety and sufficient energy.

The natural quality of our products is the main factor in promoting well-being, supported by ingredients that contribute to gut health. Enjoyment is essential as well, to help the mind relax. Our products embody a carefree approach to nutrition.

You can find more detailed information on nutrition and tolerability in our guidebook.

What is upcycling and how does Wheycation contribute to avoiding food waste?

Upcycling refers to a process of material enhancement, where materials are transformed into higher-value products. In the context of food, upcycling means using raw materials as ingredients that would otherwise not be consumed by humans and thus would be lost as food waste.

According to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, about one-third of all food produced worldwide is lost or wasted each year. These losses account for around 8 percent of greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity, significantly contributing to climate change. (Source: Bundesamt für Lebensmittelsicherheit und Veterinärwesen)

In Switzerland, about 75 percent of whey is not consumed by humans. Through upcycling, we rescue Swiss whey, prevent its waste, and thus help reduce food waste while contributing to the fight against climate change.
