Nicole Lütolf

Triathlon, trail running

Biggest challenge:
My first triathlon (Extrem Triathlon Helveticman 68 km / 2600 HM) in 2021, with a finish at Melchsee Frutt – perhaps not the easiest triathlon to get into. A week later, the Zytturm Triathlon in Zug with the Olympic distance followed, which was a "quick thing."

Best training area:
Swimming: During the winter months, swimming training takes place in the indoor pool, but as soon as the warmer months arrive, it takes place in Lake Lucerne, with or without a wetsuit, depending on the water temperature/distance.
Cycling: Naturally right on your doorstep in the beautiful canton of Nidwalden and Obwalden! There's little traffic on the roads, allowing for efficient and relaxed training. Plus, there are a thousand small mountain roads to explore, even the occasional dead end...
Running: I love variety: sometimes on asphalt, sometimes along a river on a dirt road, or up and down through the forest. When the triathlon season is over, I head to the mountains for trail running—my fourth "pleasure" sport. Central Switzerland is a great place for that, with its many mountain peaks and beautiful views.

Best gadget you always have with you during training:
Running: Nothing works without a heart rate monitor and Garmin watch.
Cycling: You have to take your iPhone with you in case you get a flat tire: 079 xxx xx xx!

What do you stop for during training?
On long bike rides: For a "shaken, cold brew" with extra caffeine or for a "pee break." If it's really hot, I might even dip my legs in a cold fountain.

Best song before you start training:
David Guetta Feat. Kid Cudi – Memories

What is your wish/goal?
To stay healthy and maintain a balance between my three kids, my job and sports.

Rebekka Estermann

Mountain bike

Biggest challenge:
After a fall off the trail this summer, which broke my collarbone, I struggled for a long time with a lack of self-confidence and the fear of falling again. It was a long process and a mental game to get back to my old self, and it took a lot of overcoming. Slowly but surely, I'm able to shred the trails with confidence again.

Best race track:
Difficult question, the Capoliveri Race in Elba has the most beautiful view and the World Cup courses in Val di Sole (Italy) and Nove Mesto (Czech Republic) are the most fun.

Best MTB tour:
In my region, that would be from Schöftland via Böhler and Rütihof to Gränichen and back over the hill. First-class paths, a high proportion of trails, and all in the forest.

Best gadget on tour:
Small pump, tube and bike tool to be prepared for anything.

What do you stop for during a ride?
When I'm traveling alone, I often stop when I see a beautiful landscape or atmosphere.

Best song before you get on your bike:
Go Solo (Alari Remix)

What I have wanted to do on the bike for a long time:
Build a small jump and set it up by my lake and then jump into the lake with the bike.

Gabriel Jungo

Alpinist and sport climber

Biggest challenge:
As an alpinist, I'm always looking for new challenges. But one of my greatest was definitely my first expedition to Kyrgyzstan. At the age of 21, I climbed to 7,000 meters above sea level. I was quite young for such altitudes, but I was still able to gain a lot of valuable experience.

Best climbing area:
There are many beautiful climbing areas. My current favorite is Lehn in Interlaken.

Best multi-pitch route:
The Wendenstöcke and the Gastlosen always offer great multi-pitch tours.

Best high-altitude tour:
Khan Tengri (7010 m above sea level)

Best gadget you always have with you in the mountains:
During training, these are definitely my AirPods and my watch. They allow me to see all the important data, and the music motivates me while I run.
On expeditions, it is the satellite phone for communication and the Bialetti cooker for the perfect coffee.

What do you stop for on tour?
Somewhere in a cozy hut for a coffee and a slice of cake. At the summit to enjoy the view – weather permitting.

Best song before you go to the mountains:
Pantera – Walk

Darleen Pfister

Triathlon

Biggest challenge:
The 2024 Nyon Triathlon in over 30°C – not my kind of temperature at all! I much prefer rain and wild waves. Even though it was only a 10 km run, it felt terribly long. That's why I was all the more pleased with my result.

Best training area for triathlon:
Swimming: Lake Thun; although cold, it offers a stunning backdrop and a beautiful color. Crossing it, I see castles on one side and an impressive Alpine panorama on the other.
Cycling: When I'm planning longer, hillier rides, the Bernese Oberland is my paradise! The Grosse Scheidegg is obviously a highlight, but my home is also a good starting point for the Emmental or the Gantrisch region.
Running: The right shore of Lake Thun, from Unterseen to Thun, is a cheesy route for a long run. But if I prefer something shorter and with less elevation gain, I get into the flow by running from Thun along the Aare River toward Bern—and then take the train back when I've had enough.

Best gadget you always have with you during training:
Running: The pink waist belt with a pocket where I can store all my gels, maps, and my phone.
Cycling: The bike computer so I don't get lost all the time.
Swimming: my swimming cap with a pink giraffe.

What do you stop for during training?
To orient myself when the sat nav goes haywire, for a pee break, to refill my bottle, and if it's a casual workout: for coffee and cake!

Best song before you start training:

Jan Steiner

Road Cyclist

Biggest challenge:
The Tour des Stations last August was no mean feat – spending almost 13 hours on the bike and climbing nearly 9,000 meters in elevation. You experience so much, but you're also glad when it's over.

Best road bike area
One of my favorite areas is definitely Toggenburg. There are so many options and quiet roads. I also really enjoy the many steep mountain roads leading up to various Alpine peaks. Of course, I also really enjoy driving on the Alpine passes.

Best gadget on tour:
My Garmin computer is always with me. I can read all the important data from it or check where the road continues. I also always have my homemade 'cardio mix' consisting of nuts, gummy bears, and dates with me. A spare tube and a small tool are also important in case I have minor technical problems.

What are you interrupting the tour for?
When I'm traveling alone, I rarely stop for a break. However, I do need a good coffee and a piece of cake every now and then, and I do make time for that.

Best song before you get on your racing bike:
There are a lot. Currently, it's mostly tracks by the bands Allah Las and The War On Drugs .
