Why is the protein content in Wheycation Protein Powder not as high as in other protein powders? Why does it contain more carbohydrates? And why do we use xylitol as a sweetener?

We have been receiving these questions more frequently lately – time for a detailed answer!
Many protein powders rely on extremely high protein content – often with the goal of containing the purest protein possible and thus being effective for muscle building. But is that really the best approach? At Wheycation, we deliberately chose a balanced combination of proteins and carbohydrates because we take a holistic approach to nutrition. And because nutritional needs are very individual.
Whey protein is a rapidly digestible protein source with a high content of essential amino acids, especially BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids). These promote muscle growth and recovery.
Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, are essential for muscle building. But without sufficient carbohydrates, the body cannot utilize proteins optimally. Especially during recovery after exercise, carbohydrates help quickly replenish muscle glycogen stores after training, so the body isn't forced to use proteins for energy. Carbohydrates also stimulate insulin production, which is said to promote the uptake of amino acids from proteins into muscle cells. This means greater strength, better recovery, and improved performance.
The carbohydrates in the Wheycation Protein Powders come naturally from the protein concentrate, i.e. from the whey, from the fruit powders and especially from the birch sugar (xylitol).

Why Xylitol? A natural sweetener with benefits
Xylitol, also known as birch sugar, is legally classified as an additive, but is derived from natural sources. Despite its common name, "birch sugar," it is not sugar, but a sugar alcohol, and appears in the nutritional information table as a carbohydrate. We use genuine Finnish birch sugar. And we consciously use xylitol because:
• Has a lower glycemic index (GI) than sugar and causes blood sugar levels to rise less.
• Despite its low GI, xylitol can slightly stimulate insulin secretion, which aids the absorption of amino acids into muscle cells.
• Offers a pleasant sweetness without an aftertaste, unlike many artificial sweeteners.
• Provides important energy but contains fewer calories than sugar (approx. 40% less than normal household sugar).
The combination is particularly suitable for active people who prefer a moderate insulin response and want to add fewer additional calories than is the case with a sugary product.

The criticism of xylitol – and our response to it
As with many ingredients, there are critical studies on xylitol that shed light on potential risks. We take these studies very seriously and closely monitor the scientific situation. Recently published studies indicate possible links between xylitol consumption and adverse effects. However, as with all nutritional studies, it is crucial to consider the overall context:
• Nutrition is complex: No single ingredient makes a diet healthy or unhealthy. What matters most is the overall picture—your lifestyle, your activity level, and your individual needs.
• Consider the study situation in a differentiated manner: Many studies are conducted on animals or under extreme conditions, e.g. with very high doses, which are not directly transferable to humans and correspond to a normal consumption level.
• Scientific knowledge is dynamic: Nutrition is a constantly evolving field. We consider the full body of research and meta-analyses to make informed decisions.
It is known that xylitol, especially in larger amounts, can have a laxative effect. Individual tolerance varies. Studies show that this effect usually only begins at about 0.5g per kilogram of body weight per day, so, for example, approximately 30-40g of xylitol for a person weighing 70-80kg. Since one serving of our powder contains only 6-7g of xylitol, the concentration is well below this threshold.
If you have concerns, we recommend starting with a smaller amount and testing your tolerance. People with irritable bowel syndrome, a general sensitivity to FODMAPs, or fructose intolerance should consume xylitol with caution. Xylitol is not suitable for infants and toddlers under 3 years of age.

For whom and when is Wheycation Protein Powder particularly useful?
In summary, combining whey protein with xylitol is a smart choice and ideal:
• For active athletes who value regeneration and muscle building or who want to avoid muscle loss.
• For people who value a balanced, protein-rich diet with reduced sugar consumption, but still do not want to miss out on excellent taste and naturalness.
The ideal time to consume them is immediately after a workout. However, protein shakes are also suitable as a meal supplement or as an energy boost between meals—even without prior training.
After a very intense or long workout, an additional carbohydrate source is highly recommended to optimize recovery.
For people who want or need to avoid xylitol completely, we offer a neutral whey protein powder without any additional ingredients, which can be used according to individual needs to enrich food with protein or to prepare a protein shake, e.g. by adding fruit powder.

Why we developed Wheycation Protein Powder this way
We are convinced that a well-thought-out combination of macronutrients—proteins, carbohydrates, and a sensible sweetener like xylitol—is the best choice for sustained energy, performance, and health. We always stay on the cutting edge of science and adapt our recipes when new findings make sense.
Our goal was to create a protein powder that is not only effective, but also suitable for everyday use and well-tolerated by as many people as possible. The combination of protein and carbohydrates (or xylitol) ensures that:
✅ The body can absorb proteins optimally.
✅ The energy stores are quickly replenished after training or on a strenuous day.
✅ The shake has a natural sweetness without artificial additives.
✅ Blood sugar levels remain stable.
✅ Can be sweetened individually or supplemented with additional carbohydrates as required.
